In this interview, Esther Abrami, violinist and TikTok sensation, who is known for her wide-ranging artistic collaborations, talks about her life and musical passions.
Born in France in 1996, Esther Abrami grew up in Aix-en-Provence. At three she was given a child-size violin by her grandmother who had hoped to pursue a musical career but gave up the violin upon her marriage. It took until she was ten for Abrami to return to the violin, but when she did, she knew within half an hour that she wanted to make the violin her life. She graduated from the Aix-en-Provence Conservatoire at the age of 13 before continuing her studies at Chetham’s School of Music in Manchester where she joined the class of Jan Repko.
Esther Abrami went on to study at the Royal College of Music. It was around this time that she began to cultivate her online presence, explaining such issues as the difference between a Stradivarius violin and an ordinary instrument. In one video she plays the violin with a kitten in her waist pouch.
In 2019, she became the first classical musician ever to win the ‘Social Media Superstar’ category at the Global Awards and in 2021 she was featured in Classic FM’s ‘30 under 30 Classical Artists to Watch’ series, curated by Julian Lloyd Webber and was listed as a ‘Rising Star’ by BBC Music Magazine. In 2021 she was signed to Sony Classical and made her Royal Albert Hall debut in 2022.
Abrami has appeared as a soloist at other venues including Carnegie Hall in New York, and the Royal Festival Hall, the Barbican Centre. She has also performed at the studios of the Classic FM radio network in Britain.
