In this new video from Âme, a production company merging classical music with other art forms, violist Lawrence Power and composer/pianist Thomas Adès perform Adès’s 3 Berceuses for Solo Viola and Piano. The video, directed by Jessie Rodger, was shot at dusk in North London.
Âme’s aim is to “make beautiful live experiences with artists on film exploring different ways to interact with spaces and bring art to life in new ways. ” As part of that, they create partnerships with artists, venues and organisations to open up performance to new audiences.
Filmed and recorded live. this is the first release of Âme’s new visual album, Dark Pastoral. The piece was commissioned by Lawrence via his Viola Commissioning Circle.
A note about Âme’s founders
Lawrence Power is a violist who has been travelling and performing with the world’s greatest orchestras and musicians for the last twenty years, among them the Royal Concertgebouw, Chicago and Boston Symphony Orchestras, the Philharmonia and many others. As a recording artist he has created an extensive discography, recently receiving a Gramophone Award, BBC Music Magazine Award and a Grammy for his work. He is often invited to work with venues and festivals as curator and has enjoyed residencies with BBC Radio 3, Turner Sims Southampton and with Aalborg Symphony Orchestra. He has also served as Artist in Residence with the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra and curated a concert series at Kings Place. He founded and serves as Artistic Director of West Wycombe Chamber Music Festival.
Jessie Rodger is a journalist-turned-filmmaker who works with a wide variety of artists and organisations, including 59 Productions, DT+, Philharmonia Orchestra and Manchester Collective. Music is often the focus of her work and her priority is to think about the way the camera connects performer with audience. Over the past few years she has collaborated with Lawrence Power on a series of extended films and projects, including the Lockdown Commissions.
